CHRONICLES 14
A Chronicle of a Vain Resistance
by Slobodan Beljanski
Novi Sad lawyer Slobodan Beljanski belongs to that really small group of
brave people who have not only openly criticized public affairs and their tragic and,
simultaneously, farcical outcome in Serbia, but have also, from the very beginning,
foreseen the final destination of such a policy. "Will the moral debt the moral
squanderers of our honor have imposed on us made be payable at all?" wondered
Beljanski back in 1991. The book "A Chronicle of a Vain Resistance" is actually
a compilation of the articles he wrote in the period 1989-2003 - all in all, 15 articles.
"From today's perspective, I am critical about some of them. I've begun writing and
publicizing these articles from the very moment I had realized that silence would be
impermissible, regardless of my growing conviction that speaking made less and less sense.
Such double feelings are mirrored in the paradox of the very title of the book: a chronic
urge to resist that grows stronger, rather than disappears with the awareness about
futility," the author wrote down in his note to the publisher. |
