44 NGOs AGAINST LEGITIMIZATION OF VIOLENCE

Forty-four non-governmental organizations strongly condemn the last in the series of impermissible statements by Minister for Infrastructure Velimir Ilic, whereby he directly and openly instigates violence against political opponents, in the first place against the Liberal Democratic Party. On February 27, 2008 Minister Ilic said that the regime could not protect the people "advocating that Kosovo belongs not to us from being beaten up by someone who comes from Kosovo." His statement was actually a call for the lynch of all individuals who think differently. We underline that in the entire history of Serbia no official has ever so overtly urged violence against political opponents. Not even has...

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE, THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA AND THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

A year ago, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its verdict in the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina versus Serbia, acquitting Serbia of direct involvement in genocide in Bosnia. We, members of the international academic community, believe that this decision - reached without a review of all the available evidence - amounts to a miscarriage of justice and a betrayal of the principle that international criminal law should act to prevent and punish the crime of genocide. The ICJ refused to subpoena Serbia to hand over the uncensored...

AN OPEN LETTER OF 18 NGOs TO PRESIDENT OF SERBIA BORIS TADIC AND FOREIGN MINISTER VUK JEREMIC

25. February 2008, HCHRS

18 NGOs strongly protest against inadequate comment of the Russian state television which in its extraordinary program "News Plus" labels the late Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic "the puppet of the West" and that "he merits the bullet". The Russian government is obliged to provide an explanation of this scandalous comment of the state television. On the contrary, it would leave an impression that the Russian government support such an interpretation of an assassination of the...

LETTER TO THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE
EU MEMBER STATES

Belgrade, 18 January 2008

Your Excellency,
We, the undersigned non-governmental organizations, welcome the latest efforts of the majority of the EU member states,

and particularly of Slovenia, acting as a president of the European Union, aimed at acceleration of Serbia's rapprochement to the EU by signing the SAA agreement. We strongly believe that at the present state of affairs this approach is the only course of action that stands a chance of keeping European prospects for Serbia open and preventing non- and quasi-democratic forces from once again isolating the country...

STOP EXTREMISTS UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE!

Press release

07/26/2007 , HCHRS

"Civic Vojvodina" demands the relevant state institutions to identify and adequately punish the

perpetrators of the last night's brutal assault against the activists of the "All Different - All Equal" campaign organized   within the Exit Festival with the assistance of the Council of Europe. "Civic Vojvodina" takes that the assault was not accidental but deliberately aimed at compromising the Exit festival. Having used up other "methods" for compromising the Exit, right-wing extremists, xenophobes and ultra-nationalists resorted to their favorite form of "combat" - violence. We demand the police to identify...

DISHONEST MANIPULATION

Press release

07/09/2007 , HCHRS

Dusan Mihajlovic, the police minister in the Zoran Djindjic cabinet, has been misusing these days the name of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia in its capacity as the publisher of the book "Testimony of Vladimir Popovic before

the Special Court at the Djindjic Assassination Trial." Namely, while defending himself from allegations by other actors of the developments preceding the murder of Premier Zoran Djindjic, Mihajlovic has been referring to the book to justify...

JOURNALIST DEJAN ANASTASIJEVIC TARGET OF LYNCH ATMOSPHERE

Press release

04/16/2007 , HCHRS

The assassination attempt at journalist Dejan Anastasijevic in the night of April 14 is by far more indicative than yet another in the series of terrorist

attacks against the freedom of expression. For, this time the target was a brave journalist who has not only authentically reported the trial of the murders of the allegedly para-military Scorpions formation, but also taken the stand at the trial of Slobodan Milosevic in The Hague. Dejan Anastasijevic was obviously another stumbling block in the way of interpreting ex-Yugoslav wars by...

THE LETTER FROM FOUR
SERBIAN NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANISATIONS TO EU

04/06/2007 , HCHRS

Serbia is again on the political agenda of both the EU and the international community and its institutions. This time because of the Kosovo Status. The international community is in a process of searching for the mechanism that could bring Serbia to constrictive attitude within this process and to open an avenue for her integration in the European processes, including the resumption of the talks on SAA between the EU and Serbia, even before Serbia has fulfilled its obligations towards the ICTY. However, bringing Serbia closer to the EU...

SHAMELESS RIDICULE OF GENOCIDE

Press release

03/14/2007 , HCHRS

By publishing a special supplement to its issue of March 12, 2007, titled “The Identity Card of Srebrenica,” the newsroom of the Belgrade-seated Glas Javnosti daily wanted, as it put it, to bring before its readership “an interesting study by Mr. Milivoj Ivanisevic that may stand for argumentation in the event the Serbian parliament deliberates a declaration /on Srebrenica/” and thus at the same time respond to “political advocates of all sorts of guilt that are being ascribed to Serbia.” The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia reminds that the...
